disease, prevents him from
reading or writing, & he speaks
with difficulty. His mind
however is far less impaired
than his body. His Memory
is good, & he enjoys a little
quiet chat. We go away
tomorrow, & I feel, that today
I shall see him for the last
time. A most painful thought
in the case of an excellent
person, whom I have known
for 40 years –
Our next visit will be
to Lees, which we hope to
reach tomorrow, & to meet
Sir William there.
Sir S. Marjoribanks is an
excellent person. I heartily
wish that his health was better.
He has a local complaint of
a painful character.
I have little to say as to domestic
matters. I have been shooting

The blindness of Govt & People as to our Defences is
painful to me.
