My dear Sir,

I am much obliged to you
for the few lines which you write
the last Mail. So far as the Galle Line
can satisfy us, that postal route
is upon a satisfactory footing, but
Melbourne very uneasy under the
appointment which they have
suffered – forgetting that we were the
proper parties to complain & that
what therefore can be agreed upon
in regard to us, is precisely what we
complain of in respect to them. Without
communicating at all to the
Government, but under an erroneous
assumption
