Wentworth whose arrival among us was
very appropriate. He came unquestionably
imbued with strong prejudices which
are gradually being expelled - & he is
the President. Thomson, Macarthur, & a few
other of the old hands are leaving the number
and they will not exeed 27 in all - he
shall probably appoint only 23 or 24 at
first. There is unquestionably a limited
amount of proper material - & I must
keep up something like a balance
between the two body, giving them
a preponderance of what is considered
my own. Mr John [indecipherable] has been
intensely anxious to come well out
of the affair - & I do not wonder at a total
stranger feeling some what nervous. It
will be a great thing to get the Land Bills
passed. This alone will put down a
vast amount of a agitation. Respecting
the Upper House I think there is no necessity
for actual haste. The reconstitution
upon an Election basis is now generally
desired - & I am not particularly solicitous
