boys & the elder sister were with us, at Lees,
during the first week of our stay there &
Elizabeth went to a Wedding Party at Morton
Hall with Arty (Lady Marjoribanks) while
Emily & I staid at Lees with Johnnie. This is
a very long preface much longer than I
intended. From Edinburgh we went to Kendal
where we learnt that Mrs Forrest was on a visit
to a Widowed sister in law at Troutbeck. We
accordingly set out after breakfast on monday
morning 1st October & reached the Farm House
of Mrs Bickett Forrest, unfortunately two or
three hours after [original crossed out] our Mrs F. had quitted it on her
return home – She lives not far from Furness.
We have since received a very kind letter from
her & hope next spring or summer, when again
going to or returning from Scotland, to arrange
a meeting with her. In the little Church yard
at Troutbeck we saw her poor husbands
grave, with a plain head stone & appro-
priate epitaph which she has placed there.
Anything more would be out of keeping
with the spot, a sequestered little chapel
in a lovely but secluded place at the
