short a drive – though we had good cause
to thank our stars that we were so near.
The weather continuing very tempestuous (for
the 2nd of the great gales) throughout the night
& the following morning, we gave up the in-
tention of going to Ulswater [Ullswater] & made the
best of our way back to Kendal. On
Saturday morning we resumed the rail &
reached Gorton station, two miles from Middle,
easily by ½ past 1 o'Clock. We have been staying
at Middle ever since, until yesterday aftn
when we came by rail a two hours trip –
over here. Today it is again raining &
blowing & we are confined to the fire side
Tomorrow if the weather permit we shall
visit some of the Staffordshire Potteries
accompanied by our kind host & hostess.
The Wilbrahams are of the old Cheshire gentry
& he will succeed, on the death of his Father
now 87 yrs old, to a fine Estate close by
this. The day after tomorrow (Saturday)
