ago I received a case from Messrs Veitch
containing 36 species 7 of which only
were alive and one of those I fear
will not live –

Whether I am more unfortunate
than others I cannot say but from
the number of cases I have got out
I have not had 5 p. c. [per cent] of the contents
alive –

When sending you the Ferns &c I will
give you a short account as to the
mode of treatment I think you ought
to pursue; I have never been in Australia,
but from what I hear it appears that
the winters are as cold as the Summers
hot, both difficult to contend with in
the cultivation of temperate country
plants – I find the hot dry winds the
most difficult to provide against –

A Gentleman here has one of the best
Ferneries I have ever seen, all the Ferns
growing [in] the open air – He has a small stream
running thro' his property with willow
trees growing on the edge and under these
he has his Ferns, amongst them are
Pteris argyrea [argyraea], alba lineata , and many others
that are supposed to do only in a house –
