My dear Sir William

I am in receipt of your letter
of the 5th inst, and also of the
soil for which I have to thank
you very much –

I am glad to hear that you
have been on the whole fortunate
with your importation of orchids
and I can quite forgive your
delay in answering my letter as
I know how much time & care
it takes to look after such a collection
particularly after their immediate
arrival –

The first case of plants I ever
received from England was a case
of orchids from Veitchs which
arrived in the most splendid condition
one could desire good & well grown
specimens, since then I have been
most unfortunate –

I did not know that you were
connected with the Chevert expedition
I always thought it was Mr Macleay
