Dearest Elizabeth –

I was so grieved
at – and unprepared
for the sorrowful tidings
of this mail – Mr Chisholm
kindly wrote to me in
April early in the midst
of his deep anxieties –
which letter did not reach
me until after the one
of the 8th May came to me –
So I was quite unprepared
to hear of your sorrow –
a few days before I had
heard that Sir George Mc
Leay had heard of
Jas Chishom losing a
child and Isabella
being very ill – but – I had
not known of that fearful
scourge scarlet fever being
