the Doctors dont seem to know yet what it
is , & some say it is a modified form of
the plague. Certain it is, that whole communities
are struck down by it – I had a visit lately
from the Bp [Bishop] of Wakefield (Walsham How)
He told me that in a pop. [population] of 30000 there
3000 were down at one moment
and a very large percentage of deaths
so much so that he preached on the subject
and he is one who takes the most cheerful
view of most subjects –

I was very glad to see dear Libbys writing
last week I feel uneasy about her – for to one
who has always had such freedom from
such attacks – they are doubly damaging
and I fear will leave her delicate for the
winter months now upon her –

We are having a very cool even chill
season. no heat as last year for instance
and the last week such heavy storms of
rain and wind .

I have so little to write of the amusing to you
dear Bessie – shut up as I now am –
& the "pace too good" for many to come to me
a lame duck such as I am now –
