alone in Germany! So I sent to invite a young lady to join
me – whose parents I have known – & who is niece to my
dear old friends the Fairholmes – The mothers are sisters born
Baroness V. Pöelnitz – she came to me fm London, & I got a young
German who knows some English – so being much astonished
the Courier-maid (who was quite ignorant of my arrangemts
and thought she had me at her mercy, without even a
single acquaintance here) by requesting her "to go" – & go at once –
I never saw astonishment so depicted in a face – but as I
had to pay her full month – she remained for the course in the
place – in fact that was all she came for – & as she told me –
all that worry & anxiety as to what I had better do no doubt interfered with my course – for I need as
not tell you she has exactly doubled all my expenses by her
behaviour! but now I am quite comfortable & find May Fairholme
a very pleasant guest – If I have time we shall probably go by
Constanz & see her relations – on our way back to England
unfortunately they begin to make their second crop of hay here & I am
