Miles Franklin pocket diary, 1915

January. 1915

Sun. 17 Went to Peace meeting in Powers Theatre in afternoon & then went home with Mr Mullenbach. Miss Henry & I came back together. Got to bed at 11. Getting a bit colder.

Mon. 18 Didn't go down till 11.30. Wm B. came in & made a call. Ethel &I had lunch at Hearth. Dinner alone at Hearth & walked home & went to bed feeling lost & futile & lonely.

Tues. 19 Got down at 10. Snowing all day. Ethel not in. Mary Galvin came home thank the Lord. Miss H. & I had dinner at Hearth . Editha Miss G. & I had dinner there & then walked home & went to bed early.

Wed. 20 Got down at 11. Wm B. took E & I to matinee. I had dinner at Hearth with E.P & Mr Krump & son & Miss H came late. E & I went home & wasted an evening on that insufferable G.A Maquay

1913 January.

Thurs. 21 Got down at 10. Thursday Ethel & I had lunch at Hearth Wm B. came in to see Ethel & then told me his troubles. Dinner at Hearth with E. & walked home. Went to Dr E. Van H. feeling tired beyond endurance. Miss Henry also tired & driven. Getting a little colder put on fur coat & was comfortable in it.

Fri. 22 Wm B came in & told me he had come off 2nd in divorcing L. Miss G & I had lunch at Hearth. In evening we were counters at mock election. & & speech by Miss Henry at Single Tax Club meeting in Schiller hall

Sat. 23 Miss Tunnell & Miss Avery had Miss H & I to lunch at Field's. Spent all afternoon talking to Miss G. She & I went to dinner at Hearth. Met E.P. There & walked home with her calling at Mulcahey's on way. Quite cold.

January. 1915 Sun. 24 Stayed in bed till 11.30 practised & worked a little on a Sibil story. Had dinner with Miss Phelps at Lincoln Park way. A surprising thaw set in.

Mon. 25 Got down at 9. astonishingly busy day. Demi called up but I was too busy to see him. Dinner at Hearth with Miss H. & Miss G & Editha. Then we went to see Mrs Pat Campbell in Pygmalion at Blackstone. Got home late.

Tues. 26 Got down at 9. Mr Maynard came in to do my booksDemi made 30 min call at noon & fell upon me like a wolf. In afternoon Ethel & I went in to Wm B's office & saw him & Demi. At night went to Agnes's Vocational ed. meeting in Orchestra Hall. Sick - up too late

Wed. 27 Got down at 10. Miss G. & I had lunch at Hearth & went to bank & to have pictures framed. Mr Maynard in again. At dinner Editha Miss G & Miss H & I met at Hearth. I was too sick to go to [continued on next page]

[continued from previous page] Twilight sleep meeting so walked home. Lillian Carr rang up & said she was going to spend the night with me. Came in at 12.

Thurs. 28 She came in again before 7. I took her to breakfast at Pkway ['befor' crossed out] at 8 then down town. Bill made a couple of short calls during day. Dinner at Hearth with Dr Lobdell & Miss Cook & walked home with Editha. Cold day but did not feel it so.

Fri. 29 Got down at 9. pottered. Went to lunch alone then to singing lesson & then to Training School meeting at 166 West Wash. at 2. Mrs Robins home from Florida. Back to office thence to dinner at Hearth alone & walked home so dead tired that I had to take a sleep.

Sat. 30 Went around town with Miss G. to bank & for pictures etc. Lunch at Garden Inn. Went to Peace meeting at 116 S. Mich 3 to 4 back to office & in the evening to party at home of Agnes Nestor. A great blizzard was raging but warm Home at 10.

January. 1915 Sun. 31 Very warm, rain, a complete thaw. Went to store for things in morning & slept & pottered in room all day. Did not accomplish anything.

Mon. February 1 Wild windy thawing day. "Life & L" meeting in office 10 to 12.30. Lunch with Ethel at Hearth. Back to office & wrote letters with Mrs R. Dinner with Editha, Miss H. & Miss G at Hearth. Walked home with Editha. Went to Dr Van Hoesen for throat.

Tues. 2 Got down early. Lunch with Ethel at Hearth. Z. Gale etc meeting from four till 7. Took Zona to Ursula for dinner Miss H. Agnes. Ethel Miss Galvin & I & escorted her to Sherman Hse afterwards & got home at 9.30. Throat very weak.

Wed. 3 Dismal day because of uncertainty. Miss Galvin, Miss Henry & I had lunch at Hearth. We were to meet Mr Gompers at 5 but the Kaiserhof where he was got on fire so that meeting [continued on next page]
