Got the awful news of Rene's
state. Poor, poor dear! Why
shd. [should] life be so cruel. Called in
Dr O'Donnell from across the
street. He was grave about my
heart & advised me to lie
still for 4 or 5 days & then
a month's rest - as if I
didn't know I wanted years
of rest & peace. Mrs
Hughes called & did
chores for me. Cold
weather - snow & sleet
& fog - never a gleam
of sun
