Jany 1st Mr Roberts having gone to Richmond
Monday. for his holidays, we were alone, and
when all the inmates were asssembled at 1/2 past 6 oclk for prayers, the Matron rose and said
I wish you all a very happy new year, then all
the thirty six stood up, tho' [though] It was with a
heavy heart the wish was expressed, for the majority of them are of those whos "feet go down to death, her steps take hold on hell."

Tuesday. There is a wonderfull [wonderful] improvement 2nd in Christina she is quite [quiet], keeps herself clean, & is obedient, we can trust her to iron now, formerly she used to scorch the clothes, in fact she would not do anything properly.

Sent Mr Roberts to ask Mr Baptiste if he would oblige us with a list of items, the weight &c in order that it may be duly reported.

Wednesday. Ellen Humfry was recognized by
3rd Mr. Robins this eveng he spoke to her
after his lecture,
Mr. R says she "has a very drunken Mother by
whom she has been trained in wickedness . she
is an expert theif [thief]" . has been in prison often,
although only 15 years old.
