January 30th
Wednesday. Went this morng. to the Wharf to procure the Purser of the "Kaikowra[Kaikoura]'s" signature to theire [their]
washing bill. got back home by 10 oclk.
Miss Galbraith is no better. I wrote to
Dr. Nathan about her.

Thursday 31st.
Sent Mr. Roberts to the Panama steamer office to urge upon them to pay the bill.
Mr Hill promised to give him a cheque on Sat'y morn'g The "Mother" sent a message from
the "good Shep'd[Shepherd]" to complain that there was a smell
coming from our water closets. I took her messenger
to see the place and promised to send my husband to see [underscored] the [inserted] nusiance.

Feb'y 1st.
Friday. Mr Roberts went next door - the Revd Mother
shewed [showed] him where "the water oozed out of water closet"
and he found it was nothing of the kind - it is
half a brick that has been removed - there which a little
water falls - but not at all in conection with the
closets. he promised her that it should be plastered
up. she asked him if I found it dificult [difficult] to
to get the inmates to work. that "they [underscored] did, altho
there were "eight [underscored] Sisters' constantly [underscored] with them.
and much of the money earned here is for work [inserted] done by our
own hands [underscored]"! she spoke of the large number of
young children they had and wished the
Reformatory was ready in order to draft
them off.
