Sarah Bates refused to scrub when Miss G
asked her. I sent for her and asked her reason
for disobeying orders. she said, "I have a pain in
my side." but you eat [ate] a hearty breakfast," well yes, but the
pain came after." you must go sit and [underlined] do nothing [end underlined] in the Cottage.
Lady Young visited us today, expressed herself
much pleasant to "see all the girls as cheerfull [cheerful]"
said she hoped we should soon have a large new
dining room, and promised to speak to Mr. Parkes
again when Parliament meets.
We left Sarah 3 hours, with nothing to do.
