July 29th Monday. The inmates are very short of work. I have tried several families and shops too. We are heartily glad, though, that the Ship's washing is finished for it is bitter cold
windy and wet weather.

Teusday [tuesday]
30th This day has been one of great trial and perplexity. Sarah Bates swearing C. Neild so unruly that she had to be locked up. untill [until] the commt met. before whom she was rude, demanding to go out.
This evening directly after tea, Christina was missed together with Ester Bruce. Kate Barry and Sarah [?] as Miss G was ill with a cold, I sent Mr Roberts to the Police Station. with their names and a small peice [piece] same as the dress worn by each of them. 9 clk - After Mr Mills and Mr Armstrong had held a temperance meeting with us. a Police man called to say that two of the runaways were at the Central P. Station and asked did I wish to take them back. Mr Roberts went with him to the station, but they refused to return. "because they had to empty the water closets." and they "were sure the ladies never intended [underscored] to get places for them only keeping them to work! [underscored]. so they were locked up in the cell.
31st in the morng Miss Galbraith and Mr Roberts went, but they still refused to return. Mr R was then obliged to appear against them when they were sent to Darlinghurst goal [gaol] Ester 14 days and Christina for 7 days.
