B-1-9 State of Tennessee January Seesions 1812 Humphreys County
Present the worshipfull Robert Jarman John White James Barfield Samuel Parker Isaiah Hamilton William H Burton Thomas Holland William Leggitt James Craig and John Robins Esquires
On motion by the court for prohibiting David H Burton former Sheriff from a vote in the present election for high Sheriff of said County and the motion being considered by the court the nays were as follows to wit Isaiah Hamilton John White James Craig Thomas Holland Samuel Parker and James Barfield, and the yeas William Leggit John Robins and William H Burton where upon it is conceded by the court that David H Burton should not legally be admitted to habe a vote in the said election
The court then proceded to elect a high Sheriff for said County and on the votes being counted there appeared to be five votes for Lewis Power and five for John H Burton with David H Burtons which the court considered illegal where upon the chairman declared John H Burton to be duly and constitutionally elected high Sheriff of the said County
I do certify the above to be a true copy of the orders taken in our Court in the election of high Sheriff at January Term 1812 given under my at office this 30th Dec 1812

Lewis Powers VS John H Burton Manadmus
This day came the plaintiff into court with his writ of mandamus from the circuit court commanding of this court to admit him to the office of high Sheriff of this County [illegible] and the mandamus being considered by the court, and it being the oppinion of this court that the plaintiff should be admitted to the office of high Sheriff as afore said whereupon it is ordered by the court that Lewis Powers be restored to the office of high Sheriff of this county and that he come forward and take the necessary oaths of office and enter into the duties of of high Sheriff of this county as such, where uopon the Defendant prays an appeal to the Honorable Circuit Court of this county and they gave him his security Isaac Levine [?] William H Burton and Thomas Simpson with the sum of five hundred Dollars
I certify that the above is a true copy of an order taken in our court at April Term 1812 Given under my hand at office this 30th day of Dec 1812

B-1-8 Sir ) these copy are to let you understand the whole proceedings of each court as respects our Sheriff and that Lewis Powers [illegible] has been acting entirely without any oppositiom since Last circuit court, and we have thought the proper to send you a copy of these orders that thereby you might commission the said Lewis Powers as early as possible
