Mayor's Office, Memphis
January 4, 1847

To His Excellency,
N. S. Brown
Gov. of Tennessee,

Sir - I have been re=
quested and urged by many of the citizens
of Memphis to advise you ^of a recent atrocious
^murder that was committed here last night. A man
named Mr. Steinents Steinments murdered a man
named George White and immediately
fled. The entire Community upon it as a
most unprovoked and wanton murder
and are desirous that every possible exer=
tion shall be made to arrest the fugi=
tive and bring him back to justice, and
express a strong desire that you, as the
Executive of the State, issue your Proc=
lamation and offer a liberal reward for
his apprehension and delivery to the Sheriff
of the County. Mr. White sustained the char=
acter of a reputable and unoffensive g
citizen and was the second man murdered
by Stements Steinments. It is hoped that your Excellency
will be pleased to take ^such steps as the law
authorizes in carrying out the wishes of a
large number of your fellow citizens,
