Dallas Texas 17th June 1848
Honl. Sir
Permit me to approach you thus upon a subject of verry [sic] small importance, particularly, when connected with the Chief Majis tracy [sic] of a State. But as the small as well as great matters have to be attended to, by that func= tionary in order to carry out the object of govern ment, I hope you will not consider it presump= tion in me to point you to a considerable incon= venience that many of the good citizens of your state labour under, that would be easily Remidied [sic] by your Honours interferance, I allude to the want of a Commissioner in this section of my state to take the acknowledgement of deeds &c
And I doubt not but you will view it at least as excusable presumption, for me to present my= self as the petitioner for that office, when I inform you that I am just Recently from Tennessee and having located at this verry [sic] important point contracble for all north eastern and northern Texas and being directly on the main traveled rout [sic] from Austin to Memphis - and as I am informed there is no such commissioner in this portion of the State, I will esteem it as a favor of high import I Refer you to Col. Ephraim H Foster —
Your Humble Servant [Jno M Crockett??]

P. S. Col. F. will well Remember me as one of his old acquaintances in Obion County in his campaign of Electioneering— I was absent at the time of your tour to that County. I enclose my professional card as a testimonial of my position in society here — as I design forwarding this by private hand to Memphis and the gentleman is in waiting I write verry [sic] hurriedly and consequently bunglingly but hope you will be able to gather my meaning —
Yours &c Jno M Crockete
