New Orleans(?Lousiana..) January 9th 1848

Sir

Your Complimentary Communication of the 31st (?) and the accompanying copy of the resolutions recently passed by the Legislature of Tennessee kindly inviting me to visit that body during the present session, did not reach my hands until yesterday.

I beg to assure you that this flattering expression of the regard of my fellowCitizens of Tennessee Conveyed as it has been through the high and imposing authority of this assembled representatives, has been received bythe (?) feelings of the liveliest gratitude, and I need hardly add that could I do so with propriet, I should at once yield to my inclinations and hasten to acknowledge of this in person my grateful obligations. duty which I am now enjoying , was obtained for the Sepcific purpose of attending to private business.

This fact i addition to the consideration that my professional services are at any moment at the disposal of the government, seems to me to render it a matter of manifest propriety that I should remain in baton Rouge and its vicinity until the expiration of my leave.

Be pleased in therefore to communicate this informaton to the Legislature, and to assure them on my behalf that I shall always retain with the deepest gratitude a recollection of the honor which they have done me in thus inviting me to visit them.

For the kind language in which you have been pleased to convey these resolutions, be pleased to accept my sincere thanks.
