Inspector Genl Office
Memphis June 12 1846
Sir-
I have to report that on Wedneday evening I shipped
three of the Infantry companies (Capt. Rustis[?], Capt. Carter
& Capt. Jones) to Maj. Gen. E.P. Gaines at N. Orleans
& on the next day the remaining company (Capt.
Murrays from Carroll) by another steamer the Farham[?].
I found the latter company very troublesome to
me & fear they will be more pest than benefit to
the service. -- By their course of conduct, countin-
anad[?] by others. I found myself compelled
upond due consideration & for reasons I will
communicate more at liesure to incur an
expense additional to what I had contemplated
or deemed necessary when I last addressed
you. --
I passed with the three first compaines
on board the Brownsville as far as Helena
-- Being informally advised that 1. two compaines would be detialed from middle & added to the West &
E. Tenn. companies to form a Regiment. I deemed
it unjust to them to organize the 4 compaines here into
a Battalion and elect a Major. -- I therefore placed
them in charge of Cpat. E.F. Rust[?], who was senior
in command to the others -- and advised Genl.
Gaines fully in my report to him. --
I am now engaged inspecting Capt. Lenerds[?]
company of horse -- I have found myself
compelled to reject several & am not more than
half through the Roll. --
