To His Exc N Cannon
D.Sir
I see in the last Banner I have been selected as one of the Directors on the part of the State in the Cumberland & Stones River Turnpike Company. I have declined allowing my name to be presented for the same place on other roads- I have also refused to be considered in any of them as an individual or to become a Director on the part of the stockholders. Yet as I do not wish to be in the way of the contemplated improvments, but on the contrary am pleased to see them carried on upon proper principles, I have not felt disposed to throw any obstructions in their way. I do not know any road under the new system which has been conducted more poorly than the one on which I am appt. But together with some other objections, my engagements are such that I cannot give the matter the proper attention You will therefore excuse me for desiring you to make another appt. in my stead. I would name as a suitable person Alfred Foster or Dr M McCorkle. Very respectfully Robt. L. Caruthers
