July the 9th 1822
Dear Sir after every wish for your wellfare I beg
leave to converse with your Excellency on the
subgect [sic] of the situation of the people of this country
whose situation I think has been as yet mistaken by
the Executive and Legislative powers of this State:
This Country was first settled by people who
purchased Leaces [sic] from the Governer [sic]; who by his
publick [sic] Address ashured [sic] them in the presance [sic]
of several Hundred Living witnesses; that little
Doubt remained but that they would Enjoy
them for four years; as he had offered the
Cherokees three years by exchanging Teritory [sic]:
To move off; they had asked much longer time;
and that as the Goverment [sic] was ever disposed to
Indulge the Cherokees; it was highly
probible [sic] that they would get ten years; which
Time those leaces [sic] ware [sic] to hold good; I being the
First witness of those circumstances ^after Jacksons treaty in this
Country; I ashure [sic] you Sir that the settlement
of these people ware [sic] the only means that
prevented the burning of Improvements and
cuting [sic] down fruit Trees; which the Government
Had paid for; as this was the practice of the
savages when they moved off where there was
not a white guard; permit me sir to return
to the situation of these People; a Land Sail [sic]
