Thirty two, was the greatest number admitted to the N.H. State
Prison in any one year, & this was immediately after the
close of the last war. In Vermont, the largest number was admitted in
1816, 54- in Virginia, in 1820, 92- in Massachusetts, in 1818, 164- in Penn-
sylvania, in 1816, 433- in N. York, in 1816, 436- all directly after the war-

[Bismarks?]. The state prison is a handsome building, situated
in Concord, three stories high, built entirely of granite. It is
70 feet in length, 36 feet wide, the walls of which are three feet
in thickness- It contains 36 cells, of 8 feet by 9, except 6 in the upper
story, for the accomodation of the sick & 6, which are 10, feet by 17~
The yard is enclosed by a [?] stone wall of 259, by 192 fourteen feet
high, surmounted by a range of pickets 14 feet in length. Connect-
ed with the prison, & adjoining to it, is a house for the accommoda-
tion of the Warden, his family, guards, overseers &c, built of granite,
4 stories high, exclusive of basement, & is 49 feet by 22.- The officers of
the institution are a Warden & deputy warden- There are im-
ployed [sic], a Chaplain, Physician, two overseers of the work shops, & four
guards. The whole receive their pay from the proceeds of the prison ex-^cept
the Warden- The Governor & council for the time being, are directors
of this institution. Since Nov. 1812, 257 have been committed, 4 of whom
were females, & 19 foreigners. Of these 24, were sentenced for horse stealing-
30, for counterfeiting & forgery- 8, assault &c- 3 manslaugher- 1, for
perjury- 4 arson- 3 burglary- 126, stealing- The greatest number
confined at any one time 74, usually between 60 & 70- The [police? policy?] of
the prison is rigid & salutary- The convicts are dressed in uniform,
& comfortably fed. The sexes are kept apart. Great care is bestowed
by the officers of the prison upon the morals of the convicts, that offend-
ers may be reformed & fitted to respect those laws, for the violation
of which they have been condemed to suffer.
