Frankfort Kentucky
September 15. 1826
His Excellency
The Governor of Kentucky.
Sir.
The Queries submitted to you by the Governor
of Tennessee, relative to the Penitentiary system,
and which you have referred to me, I have duly
considered; and will very cheerfully communicate
all the information, I can, in relation to the
subject embraced by them. Some of them, not
seeming to fall properly within my province, I
have not answered; presuming it will be in
your power to furnish more accurate and sat
isfactory details than I could pretend to do. I have
noted down the questions in the order they are
placed, as referred to me - the proper answer fol:
lowing immediately.
Question. What is the size of your Penitentiary?
Answer. It measures four hundred yards round
the wall exteriorly [sic]: the figure being nearly a square,
and containing an area of about two acres.
What did it cost - How long has it been
in use?
