Gov. William Carroll

Sir the [??decease] of my
Farther [sic] caused a vacancy in the office
of Surveyor General of the Hiwassee district
it will be with you to fill the vacancy
untill [sic] the next Session of the General
assembly should you upon Enquiry
believe me qualified to discharge the
duty of the office and concur it with
the duty you owe the public to confer
on me the protem appointment I will
be much obliged to you to [hand?] the
offer as it would afford me an opportunity
of winding up my Farthers [sic] unfinished
business I will refer you for information
to General Dunlop and John. F. Gillespey
who have been long acquainted with me
