Trenton February 7th 1828
Dear Sir
I was on this evening informed by
Hugh Dunlap who is spending a few days with
Masonic Bretheren in our Town, that Fitsgerald
the Attoy General for this section of the District
is about [?], he has advised me to
make application for the appointment,
upon condition there is a vacancy I wish you to
understand that I am an applicant for the
Office - - Dunlap [saies?] he will write to you con-
cerning it. - - If Fitsgerald resigns I will if necessary
make any other provision, you may think ne-
cessary - he told Dunlap he intended leaving
this section of Country, if so - the appointment
of some individual is the consequence -
There is but one Lawyer (besides my partner Brown
who accompanied me here) In Trenton who is a
young gentleman of sterling character - I am much
pleased with my situation, since the third of
January we have received promissory to the amount
of $145. One hundred for defending a Girl before
a magistrate, for the murdering of her own child, she
was inspected but was not imprisioned - the ground
not being sufficiently strong - we received for security in
this case, the richest man in Gibson County whose
