Greeneville (Ten) 4th March 1828.

Sir,

The undersigned are induced to address your
Excellency, on the occasion of this communication, with feelings of
more than ordinary solicitude. A petition on behalf of Daniel
Allen
of this county to Gov. Carroll praying that the clemency
of the executive, might be interposed in his behalf, so that
the legal consequences of his conviction for Manslaughter might
be avated will be laid before you. By that petition and
accompanying documents, you will be made acquainted with
the facts, and therefore we forbear a recapitulation of them. We
were the Counsel of Daniel Allen in this unfortunate and
melancholy affair, and are well acquainted with the attending
circumstances; and while we join with all men of correct moral
feelings, in deprecating the crime of unlawfully shedding human
blood, we believe we are warranted in saying that it has rare
=ly occurred in the history of judicial proceeding, that a more
fit subject for the interference of executive mercy has been pres
=ented than the unfortunate Allen. It is with these feelings that
