Williamson, March 8th 1828.
Dear Sir,
I received your letter of the 28th February
last, as I started from Columbia two days ago, and in
answer to it have to say, that I am much flattered
by your kind expressions of confidence, but after all
care taken to consider of it, I am sorry to inform
your Excellency that I am so much engaged in
some domestic arrangements, and a rather un-
usual press of professional business, that I cannot
accept the situation you so kindly offer. I assure
you sir that in other circumstances I should be
gratified to render any serice within the compass
of my ability in relation to the business spoken of.
With best wishes for your health and prosperity
I am sir respectfully your humble
servant. Nicholas P. Smith
His Excellency Samuel Houston
