To His Excellency James C Jones Governor of the State of Tennessee
We your Memerialist being citizens of the [illegible] [illegible] Morgan 6th State aforesaid being assembled at the house of Morris Bakers on the 23rd May 1842 for the purpose of electing a Depty [Ispt?] in 2nd County and having deliberatedly reflected on the indebtedness of the people together with the security of money and we believe that the most [illegible] [illegible] must follow if the people continue trying to collect debts off each other we believe that under existing circumstances thereforth of the community will be obliged [illegible] by the sacrefise of their property and their debts remain the Legislature together as speedily as posable for the purpose of establishing some measure that will relave the distress es of the community, we believe that the construction will not prohibit the people from any the benefits of [illegible] that is equal in its apperation & consentive by all is a [illegible] -jointly, and we have reason to think that nine [illegible] the citizens of this State would be willing that all private debt should remain unpaid for a term of two years provided that the law did not compell [illegible] to pay sooner we believe that one of two things ought to be caused into effect [illegible] stop the execution law for a certain time or have [illegible] law say that mans property if sold by a collecting officerr shall not be taken from him under two thirds [illegible], if neither is done we cannot see any way that the people can be [illegible] by Legislative aid. We therefore hope that you will use all means to have one of these measures caried into effect will all posable speed.
