Nashville, March 17th, 1819
Sir,
The president of the United States, by and with
the advice of the Senate, has thought proper to appoint
us, together with Col: Newton Cannon to hold a treaty with
the chickasaw tribe of Indians, for the purpose of procuring
a cession of a Salt Spring with the adjacent land contem-
plated in the 4th article of the late treaty of Jackson and
Shelby with that tribe. The cession, if made, to be for the
use of the State of Tennessee, and the treaty to be hed at the
expense of the State -
We deem it our duty to give the earliest in=
formation to your Excellency, in order that you may place
at our disposal such funds as may be necessary to effectuate
so desirable an object, and we shall be happy at the same time
to receive any information from your Excellency tending to fur=
the object in view.
As yet, we have not had an opportunity of
seeing or communicating with Colo Cannon, but make no
doubt of his accepting of the Commission.
