Knoxville April 7th 1819
Dear Sir.
Yours of the 31st March is recd.
Notwithstanding my silence might indicate
a disposition to continue in the office of
adjutant General; yet I do assure you
you that I have constantly been determined
to resign, ever since and before I named it
to you velbally [verbally?] [sic];- was I ever so capable to discharge
the duties of this office, the multifarious business
in which I am engaged would render me
incompetant [sic] to a faithful performance; I therefore
wish you to consider me no longer in that office.
Your friendly solicitation for a further continu
=ance, I receive as an additional mark of
your continued esteem. - shall I send the
Books and papers to Nashville, an opportunity
of a direct conveyance to Murfreesboro will
seldom offer.
You see from the papers that we
recd General Jackson with that mark of respect
