Sir,
I understand that Messrs
Cannon, Weakley & Overton have
not concluded a treaty with
the Chickasaw tribe of Indians
for a cession of the salt spring
on Sandy river - And that they
are probably awaiting the meeting
of the Legislature - I deem it my
duty to submit to you a copy of
the resolution which produced
this [rugoliation? regulation?], and to state the
views I entertained in order to
enable you (if you should think
proper) to being the subject before
the Legislature - The U States have
heretofore, gratuitously, given
the salt springs in the new States
to those states - The one on Sandy
river in this State is said to be
equal to any one East of the
Mississippi river - And I considered
it of great importance that this
saline should become the property
of Tennessee - If it were under the
control of the ^legislature that it would
produce a [seem?] perhaps equal
to the present [page damaged]
