Dear sir,

I have the Honor of

I have been informed that Mr Wm Sharp
for some time past has been considered as under
arrest, charged with improper conduct or expres
sions respecting Indian Affairs

It is with reluctance that I ^I feel no disposition at any time
express an opinion as to the Utility or propriety
to interfere with of the measures adopted by those who are entrusted with
the execution of the laws of the United States. But if
that business has not been forwarded to brought before the federal judi
ciary in such a manner as to put it out of your power
I have no hesitation to express a wish that it
could be accommodated and Mr Sharp released
from farther embarrassment on that account

I say this because from an acquaintance
with Mr Sharp for several years I am induced
to believe that he is not inimical to the government
or measures of the United States although he may
in a particular instance have used some impru
dent and unguarded expressions, and also
because I have a confidence that the real interest
of the United States and of this state in particular
would not be injured but rather promoted by such
a procedure

I am &c
