Sir,

Yours of 12th Inst. has been received. It is truly
to be lamented that those Villains continue their
depredations on the road. I believe The President
is disposed to do every thing in his power to put
a stop to the commission of such outrages and to
bring the offenders to condign punishment. I wrote
to the secretary at War in June last on this subject
and every measure ^then suggested has been adopted

I enclose you A copy of this letter Ireceived in
reply from the Secretary at War is herewith enclosed

I have heard lately that the notorious Mason
has been killed and that some of Mr Nash's property
was found in his possession. Please inform me whether
you think the report may be relied on, and
in what manner the event fact was done if true
if true by whom, and in what manner was so good an act done

I am
Sir with real esteem
Your Huml Servt
