South West Point 24th July 1802
Sir Mr. John Smith J this day waited on me and informed me that he had purchand Colo. Outlaws Interest in the Cumberland Turn pike Road and that he was preparing to put in his hand next week to work, how far you may view[guess?] this. Business proper or improper I wish to be immediately advised Last Monday was a fortnight I Command the Business of Cutting and Retaining that Road and by Saturday next shall have got over the worst and most laborious part of the work & for Mr Smith or any other person now to come forward to say they are prepared to do their part I must confess is what I do not fairly Comprehend-

Mr Smiths Letter on that subject dictated by Wm Tharp you wil sir Confer an obligation on me by giving me your advice on that subject and in what manner I shall proceed.
