that a road will shortly be opened at the expence
of the United State [sic], from Nashville to the Mississippi
Territory
. It is expected that this state will coope
rate so far as to authorize the road to be opened to the
Indian boundary line. Without such co-operation
the object cannot be carried into compleat effect.

If we take a comprehensive view of the General
government of which we form a part we will see
with pleasure the prosperous situation to in which
by the goodness smiles of Divine Providence it is
placed - At present in peace with all the European
powers and rapidly advancing in Wealth and Dignity
In such a situation with regret we hear that in some
of our Sister States the acrimony of party spirit continues
to agitate the public minds of the citizens. Let us
continue to profit by their experience, and in avoiding
the causes we will avoid the pernicious effects. Among
men accustomed as we are to freedom of speech and
Independence of sentiment, differences of opinion on
important political subjects have arisen and no doubt
will occasionally arise, but social Harmony and
private friendship have not thereby been destroyed

In selecting men to discharge the duties of office
within this state if you continue as heretofore agreeable to the solemn obligations prescribed in the Constitution to
select those whom you shall deem attached to the interests
of the state and think possessed of and possessed of suffi
cient talents and integrity without regard to party
influence I have no doubt we shall experience
the beneficial effects, and that the same degree of
Harmony and internal tranquility will continue prevail throughout the State
