State of Tennessee 7th June 1796

Sir

A favourable opportunity having presented accidenteally presenting itself for the immediate Conveyance of a Communication to your Excellency, I do myself the honor, of informing your Excellency that your last dispatches forwarded to my predecessor Governor Blount respecting a waggon road being opened cut through the Western Mountains, was laid before the General Assembly, but that body being much eng =aged at the last sess in business of an Great importance at the time; and some obsticles appearing embarrasments being in the way, the legislature ha not easily surmounted: The legislature duly proceeded to Act as in the manner you will discover by the Resolve, I have herein inclosed. for Nevertheless I have the pleasure to inform you that the good Citizens of this State, have that road conceived themselves so much interested in haveing a waggon of the road, through the Mountains, that they have liberally contributed in such a manner ^so as to induce enable Mr Charles Robertson of Greene county, A Gentlem =an

B-1-7-1 of reputation and respect to undertake the cuting clearing and makeing ^opening of a Waggon road from the Warm springs, a Crossing the mountain into what is called extending to a main road in greene county to a neighbourhood known by the name of Merrills cove, being the route and way approved of, and recommended recommended by the Commissioners appointed for that purpose by the from your state. Mr Robertson have entered into bond, to have the road compleatly finished On or before the first day of October next so as to enable a Waggon with only four horses, to ^travel & pass ^the same with fifteen hundred weight

permit me to say sir, that I have no doubt but the road will be ^compleatly finished by the time stipulated, and have full Expectations that the same will tend to Mutual and reciprocal Advantages. I will further permit me to further to add, that nothing shall be lacking in me, to hasten forward on a friendly and interesting intercourse; And have long since viewed [Charlestown?] a place well situated, for ^the commerical ^transactions of this Country. provided, Goods could be supplied obtained on reasonable terms
