Knoxville 11th June 1798.

Sir

I do myself the honor to acknowledge, the recipt [sic]
I have recd your favor of the 25 ult with the
Several pamphets therein inclosed- I have read
the whole with pleasure, and I am am perfectly
evinced ^satisfied our government have discovered every
Amicable ^reasonable disposition, ^suitable for the purpose of
reestablishing that peace friendship, and
harmony, that at a former period existed in so
great degree, between the United States, and the
French Nation - I trust and earnestly hope, the
measures which have been taken by the executive, of
the United States, will be deeemed ^by the good people of America, ample, & Just, and
highly proper and becoming the dignity of our
American Government. by all those I beg leave to
repeat that you may confidently ^depend, rely that I
Shall take ^use every means in my power, to evince
the people of this State, the great necessity of
their United exertions in ^the defence of their country;
and with great pleasure I do can assure you,
