lands. Secondly Iknow of no clause in the Federal
constituted compact, or indeed the No Carolina Cession
Act, that would warrant a decree of of the Supreme
Judiciary of the United States, unfavourable to
Tennessee; but when Circumstances are duly
considered, it is very problamatical what might
be the event of such an Issue
You will please suffer me further to say, that
was there some immediate mode adopted by which
the dispute could be determined upon, that it would
be more for ^advancing the interest of the state, then to let a
great portion of the landed property lye in a
doubtful situation, provided the adjustment of
our claim were not immoderate- Would not
the legislature of the U. States refer the dispute
to commissioners to be appointed by the parties,
whose decision should be a full and complete
determination: Ihave thought some measure like
the latter would probably be most likely to bring
about ^and produce an amicable adjustment and reconciation
between of the parties concerned- Your own knowledg
of the subject is competant to every thing necessary
to be done, and your exertions on the Occasion
will not be lacking Ihave full confidence,
Ihave the honour to be, with every
mark of respect & sincere esteem
