Knoxville 4th September 1796
Sir,
Since your departure from this place, I found
that I was compelled to go to Washington shortly, and
there being but little business on hand, have concluded
to go at this time. The first materiel [sic] business that
will come on will be to issue Commissions in the
Military department, I shall be back earlier enough
for that business as I do not intend staying but a
few days in Washington. And I fear that we will
not be able to obtain blanks previous to Mr Roulstones
return from North Carolina, as there appears to be
no probability of procuring paper at this time, sufficient
for that purpose.
I am with Esteem
your Excellency's Obt Servant
Wm Maclin
