Sir,
The last conference we had with the President of
of the United States, upon the Subject of the affairs of Tennessee,
he Suggested to us, the propriety of communicating to you, Our
opinion of the time, at which it would be most advisable, to
hold the Treaty, with the Cherokee Indians - From our knowledge
of Indian pursuits, we are inclined to think, that between the twenty
=ith [sic] of March, and first of May, would be a proper time,
to commence the Treaty; as the Indians generally all return -
from their winter hunts, from the first to the twentyith [sic] of
March - and commence their Spring hunts, about the first
of May - Between those two periods therefore, we conceive, that a more
numerous delegation of the Chiefs and warriors may be had, than
at almost any other Season of the year - Your knowledge
of the distresses of the Frontier Citizens of Tennessee, must impress
you, with the propriety and necessity of holding the Treaty, as
soon, as a full representation of the head men and warriors, can
be obtained - we therefore propose, the twenty fifth day of March
