Dr Sir

With the approbation of Colo Meigs I have requested him
to invite the Cherokee Cheifs to a meeting at the Garrison
on the 20th August to commence our negociations, which
I hope will meet your expectation & concurrance-

I presume you have made your calcalation
what sum ^you think may be necessary for carrying the Treaty
in its exterior position into effect,- On this subject please
write me and Iwill endeavor to have you provid
-ed
provision made either with the money or warrants to the amount, and also
to
what we may be ultimately required for fully
effecting and compleating the ^contemplated object can only be
ascertained at the time when the business ^is completed - I have only
requested the Cheifs to be invited, as Iwish to avoid as much
as possible all unnecessary expenditures - From both
written and verbal communications ^immeadiately from the nation,
I have reason to anticipate a favorable Treaty, unless preven
=ted by some persons whose interests would induce them to pre
=vent it if in their power-

I have the honor to be sir,
