New Orleans Feby 26^th 1857 William Thompson Esqr. Nashville Tenn. Dear Friend, I have sold my property in Mifs. Paid all my debts, which makes me feel very comfortable, and with a small (?) of property sufficient to live on with economy have removed to this place, and shall now be able for the first time in my life to give my whole time and whole mind ot my profession, having nothing to an=noy me. I thought it would be pleasing to you to have that after a long life of harassment & distress I have such a prospect of a peaceful and contented old age.

I enclose you my card which you will do me a favor if you will give a place in your office. I have a son Joseph D. Mayes, who has been some two years engaged in the study of law. H is very remarkable for industry & morality, and I desire to obtain for him the appointment of Com=missioner in Louisana, to take depositions, the acknowledgement of deeds &tc. If appointed he will do the business well. Can you & will you procure for him the appontment for Tennessee?
