Granville Ohio, July 29, 1854

To R. Kennicott Esq,

Dear Sir,

At the suggestion of Prof. Baird of the Smithsonian Institution, I send you some of the Cocci of an insect of an insect or bark larve which has commenced its depredations, on on a very fine hedge of mine of the Osage orange. The size and color of the insect can be seen from the shield which in most cases remains above the neck which encloses the eggs. Is the insect new? Or is it one well known to Naturalists? Are there any means of destroying it? Any information which you can communicate on the subject will be gratefully acknowledged.

Very respectfully yours, P. Carter
