If any taint of putrifaction is perceived the
liquor must be instantly changed.
When the specimens are to be sent off
procure a small keg - let it soak in water for
several days to swell it properly; - remove the
upper hooks and take out the head, - taking care
to mark it so that it may be replaced in the
same position; - then pack in the specimens
with a little cotton (the fish should be wrapped
in rags to prevent the loss of scales) by ruffing) If the
specimens and their packing of cotton do not fill
the keg it must be filled quite full with
cotton after moistening the whole that it may
settle as much as it will. - Replace the head, drive
on the hooks and fasten it securely. then fill
in the liquor through the bung hole. but before
it is finally fastened up let it stand a half
hour or more when the slight space left by the soaking
away of the liquor may be filled the bung stuffed
securely and the specimens may travel for
thousands of miles in safety.

loosely with the rest but they may be put it
