At Home, Sept. 3d, Sunday.

Why Bob!

What @ beautiful letter that was you wrote me from the "comical city of snakes" which you had no "time to describe" but I have the promise of "hearing about some other time. Now I dont like to be put off till "some other time". If you were about sitting down to dinner, and should call for something where with to appease your appetite you would hardly be satisfied with the answer "some other time". Your

hungry stomach would cry now, and I cry now. Now you are not going to feel so "dignified" with your new and "responsible" duties but what you shall take time to answer all my questions be theyir name "legion", I will not promise to give you $3.00 @ day for the same; but you must be so rich now that money would be no consideration with you.

I am even with you in having felt "low spirited" and sad, I entered upon my duties as teacher with many @ gloomy forboding; and for the first week was miserable enough. It is wrong to indulge in such feelings but one cannot help it once in @ while. I trust you are feeling happier now. I know that I am. The prospect of soon seeing "[illegible]" should y make your heart leap with joy and doubtless it does even now even now at the thought.

You are but experiencing the same feeling of most mortals. They know that they "must work" "darn it", but I think you have made a good resolution; and I would abide by it by all means. "A rolling stone gathers no moss." is the old saying and it is @ true one, as many have found by sad experience. I am sorry that you cannot pursue the study of Nat. History as much as you desire but all in good time. You will have an opportunity yet. You will be @ "rich man" perhaps and then good bye to the "shovel and the hoe" or rather the quinine and saddle bags, and take up the rattlesnakes and go--- just where you please. My rattlesnake is @ great curiosity, though some faint-hearted misses are very much afraid of it. I tell you I can teach school. Dont say cant to me if you know when you are well off. I would not get

"sick of teaching school in three months" for any thing. I like it first-rate now; though it is hard work.

What have you been doing? and what are you now doing? and what are you going to do? I suppose of course you will attend the great fair. I would send in some rattle= snakes. You might take the premium; doubtless you would.

Do you hear anything of Charlie Pease now-a-days? Mrs. Dokers spent three or four days with us. She is now I suppose in Chicago. I fear however that they got caught in the storm at Milwaukie. You will doubtless see him in Chicago

Give my best love to [illegible], and that you may be always happy is the wish of Maria.

I cant make flourishes. "darn it".
