Dear Bob,

I have just recieved yours written the 27" - long time - and have only one half hour to answer before the male closes -

I would gladly be with you tonight for I feel a deep interest in the success of this enterprise but I cannot possibly come on so short a notice - have many patients to see today -

You say, "Money can be obtained in abundance" - this is cheering news for without funds the thing cant go on - but there is something else wanting - an intelligent understanding of what the objects of the Society are - and how it should be worked, and what benefitts may be expected to flow from the association of men of education, deeply interested in ^{the promotion of} Science -

Did the citizens of Chicago but appreciate the truth; that to t^{he labors of} Societies of the kind contemplated

they are indebted for most of the comforts and enjoyments of Sivilization - that every new discovery in science - no matter how small adds another star to the circle of human knowledge which will shine for ever, and shed light upon the other=wise dark path of original investigation, - making it more easy to advance - they would take hould of the enterprise in good ernest - western like only to succeed -

You may pledge my hearty cooperation, and that I will doo whatever in me lies to promote the very laudable object.

In regard to the fees to be charged members - make it large as you can stand for be assured there is something valuable to be obtained without cost - either in money or labor -

Give my compliments to Dr Andrews & Dr Blainy - Tell me why [illegible] did nto come to shoot birds if you can -

When will you and and your sisters be in Racine? I have just sent to Agassey a lot of living turtles - our is of great intrest to him - must close -
