Smithsonian Institution Washington, D.C. April 10, 1857

The Smithsonian Institution cordially recommends Robert Kennicott of West Northfield, Ill., to all friends of science in the West, as a zealous and successful student of Natural History. He is at present engaged in an exploration of the State of Illinois, with the view of forming a museum for the North Western University at Evanston, and it is much to be desired that all possible aid be rendered him in the prosecution of so interesting an enterprise.

Joseph Henry Secretary S.I.
