The Grove May 14th 1857

Dear Brother.

I have not written to you before since Sunday - but if you knew how busy I hadve been you would forgive me for neglecting to write to you.

We have not got any girl yet, and school commenced Monday - Cora and I were very anxious to begin with the school so we have had to work pretty hard out of school. I have skined (since Sunday) ten birds for you I thought you would rather have me do that than to write you three letters. Last night I skined a weasel, it was caught in the nursey - by Mr Carltons dog - Major say he is a ground gdog, and that

Bob would give 25 dollars for him if he knew him as well as he does. He can snap a mink up in a minuet.

Ransom was down from The Folly last night, he says he has seen some new kind of snipe he promised to get me some. Uncle Flint is up at The Folly - Grand Mother is quite sick, and Aunt Gene has had the rhume= =tism, so I expect he will stay some time. I guess their gover= =ness does not suite them very well - I do not think they will keep her long.

It has been raining for the last tew days, and the roads are "terrabl," we almost slump through, as Miss Boyden would say, comeing to school.

We have not heard from Miss Boyden this long time

except through Frank - he seems to be smitten.

Uncle Alonzo is very lame now he suffers a great deal - they have no man - and Aunt Dele has to do all her own work, Aand the farm work too, she does have a hard time. and no mistake.

Our Hyacinths are most beautiful this year - Do you see any flowers down there?

I suppose they have very pretty wild flowers - don't they?

I think we shall have a good school this summer.

You would laugh if you could hear Ginny and Charlie Sherwin say their Geography lesson. I guess you remember how they used to say it, and they have not improved any as I see.

Cold & looks like more rain – possibly snow. A letter from “ancient Simeon” (Francis) says the work on balance of Ag’l Transactions not yet commenced Do you hear any thing from your Patent office paper? I should like to know, before I write them asking for proof sheets; as I intend to do, soon –

Last mail I forwarded you a letter from Harold Hinde, who is getting up the literary part of Apple=tons Cyclopedia, proposing you for the Natural History. I don’t believe that their offer will pay you, under present circumstances – though you might do the Zoology, perhaps –
